Jim McKelvey, best known for co-founding multi-billion dollar company Square, joined the stage at Giant Ideas to talk about moving the needle of drug discovery.McKelvey co-founded Square with Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey in 2009, and it became a revolutionary payment processing company, allowing small businesses to accept credit card payments via a simple mobile device. The company is now worth a multi-billion dollar valuation, with the card payment design even featured in the Museum of Modern Art.Jim is a true renaissance man. He’s a philanthropist, donating $15 million to the Washington University to build a new computer science and engineering building named after his father. He’s also an accomplished glassblower. He has his own glass art studio and gallery. Since founding Square he has built Invisibly - a company seeking to allow consumers to profit from their online data - and is now exploring how to transform drug discovery.Losing his mother in his twenties created a drive for Jim to act. It also made him want to tackle the issue of Eroom's law: the observation that drug discovery is becoming slower and more expensive over time. In this talk he talks about the issues with drug discovery, why smart people are getting bad answers, and how he wants to solve this issue. This talk was recorded live at our Giant Ideas event at the Tate Modern earlier this year. Hello, humans! Let's dive into the world of lifehacking today, a delightful arena where simplicity meets ingenuity. Lifehacking is about increasing productivity and efficiency in everyday tasks, saving you time, energy, and even money, allowing for a smoother and more enjoyable life experience.Starting off, let's talk about clutter. A cluttered workspace can clutter the mind. Organizing your workspace not only clears physical space but also helps in clearing your mind, making you more productive and less stressed. Simple tools like drawer dividers, labels, and digital apps like Evernote or Microsoft OneNote can help you keep not just your physical but also your digital workspace organized.Switching gears to daily routines, have you ever tried theme days? This is a powerful lifehack borrowed from high achievers like Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter, who dedicates specific days to specific themes of work. For instance, you could mark one day for meetings, another for creative work, and another for administrative tasks. This method reduces the cognitive load of switching tasks and enhances focus. Now, let’s tackle health—with a tech twist! Fitness trackers and smartwatches like those from Fitbit or the Apple Watch can significantly enhance your physical health monitoring. These devices track your steps, heart rate, sleep patterns, and more, providing data that can motivate you to move more and sleep better. Paired with apps like MyFitnessPal, they can also help you monitor your diet.In the kitchen, efficiency is king. One of my favorite hacks is batch cooking and meal prepping. Spending a few hours on a Sunday cooking meals for the week not only saves time on busy weekdays but also helps you eat healthier. Devices like the Instant Pot reduce cooking time dramatically and allow for a variety of meals to be prepared with ease. Finally, let’s talk about mental wellness, an often overlooked aspect of lifehacking. Meditation and mindfulness can seem daunting, but apps like Headspace or Calm make it accessible and straightforward. Just a few minutes a day can help reduce stress and improve overall mental health. Each of these hacks, when integrated thoughtfully into your life, can lead to profound positive changes. It’s all about finding what works best for you and tweaking it to fit your lifestyle. After all, the ultimate lifehack is creating a life you don’t feel the need to escape from, but rather, one you look forward to every day. Happy lifehacking! In the high-stakes world of Silicon Valley and its venture capital landscape, the dynamics and outcomes of investing in tech companies can be both thrilling and perilous. A vivid example is the fallout experienced by investors following Elon Musk's takeover of the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, now X. Since Musk's dramatic acquisition, key investors, including prominent figures like Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, Jack Dorsey, Larry Ellison, and major firms such as Sequoia Capital, have reportedly seen their investments plummet, cumulating in a staggering collective loss exceeding $24 billion.Despite such tumultuous events, the innovative spirit in Silicon Valley remains undeterred, exemplified by the ambitious strides of AI pioneer Ilya Sutskever. Formerly a chief scientist at OpenAI, Sutskever has successfully raised a significant $1 billion for his new venture, Safe Superintelligence (SSI). This venture aims to develop technologies ensuring artificial intelligence systems operate safely and beneficially, reflecting both a forward-thinking outlook and acknowledgment of AI's profound implications on society. The concentration of AI talent in the region solidifies Silicon Valley’s role as a technological powerhouse, with a significant portion of America’s AI engineers working out of the Bay Area and Seattle. This concentration underscores the regions' crucial roles in driving forward technological innovation and development in the AI sector. On a more specialized note, the AI security realm is also seeing notable advancements, with startups like Acuvity making strides. Supported by Foundation Capital, Acuvity secured funding to enhance its Gen AI security platform through advanced AI programming accelerators, spotlighting the critical intersection of cybersecurity and artificial intelligence.Such developments vividly illustrate the multifaceted landscape of Silicon Valley’s venture capital environment, where despite occasional setbacks like those witnessed by Musk's X, the relentless pursuit of innovation continues to drive forward new technologies and solutions that could shape the future. The company's initial focus was on cleaning sprays and foaming hand soaps, typically composed of up to 90% water and packaged in single-use plastic bottles. BlueLand developed a novel solution in the form of dry refill tablets that, when mixed with water, create cleaning solutions. These tablets can be packaged in paper instead of plastic, reducing plastic waste significantly. Customers can reuse their existing bottles or opt for BlueLand's reusable \"forever\" bottles. As the curtain continues to be pulled on the nightlife of the music industry's imperials, a previously sealed court document reveals some surprising details linking the renowned Sean Combs, Jack Dorsey, Usher, and the famous Justin Bieber. Industry titan Sean Combs, famously known as Diddy or P.Diddy, is well known for his contribution to the music and business sectors over the years. From the things of history, it is understandably hard to imagine Usher Raymond, another giant in the music scene, under the abusive tendencies of Diddy. Still, the unsealed documents confirm otherwise. Though the details of the abuse are withheld, this revelation paints a new picture relating Diddy to some surprising circles.Herein emerges another link in this chain of industry’s high names. Grammy award-winning artist Usher, who was under Diddy's wings for a time, emerges as the bridge between Diddy and the globally celebrated artist Justin Bieber. Usher, credited with introducing Bieber to Diddy, apparently set the stage for the extravagant promises Diddy would eventually offer Bieber. Bieber, who holds a special place in many hearts due to his rise from obscurity to stardom, attracts all sorts of attention and promises. Dangling amongst these promises is one made by Diddy, of a brand-new Lamborghini. This detail sparks intrigue and raises questions. Was this a symbol of comradery, or perhaps an inducement tactic? Or, could this be a mere hurl from Diddy's renowned showmanship? The dynamic complexity and unpredictable traits of industry relations summon a guessing game. Moreover, the surprising inclusion of Twitter CEO, Jack Dorsey, in these relations is creating mystery. How exactly does Dorsey fit into this mosaic crafted by the music industry's powerhouses?Undoubtedly, the unsealing of court documents is adding new dimensions to our understanding of industry relationships and dynamics. As observers stand on the cusp of these revelations, one cannot help but wonder what other secrets remain sealed in the music industry’s vast vault, awaiting their day in the bright light. The revelations from these unsealed documents deny two notions: that we know it all and that fame is a haven devoid of pain and struggle. We find ourselves in awe and curiosity, looking forward to what the next chapter in this unfolding narrative may hold.
